Studies on Bolting of Stored Seeds of Radish (Raphanus sativus L.)
George, Clifford

Abstract
This experiment was carried out in order to elucidate cold requirement and photosensitivity for bolting of stored seeds of radish. Jinju-daepyeong radish seeds stored for one and two years and newly harvested one were water-imbibed and treated with 4.10 and 15¡É for 5 and 10 days before seeding on June 25, July 6 and 20. Halves of the plots sown on July 20 were shaded with net tunnels to reduce 20 percent of sunlight for 90 days from the seeding date.
Seeds stored in 4¡É-66% RH, 4¡É-24% RH and the room conditions for 1 year were grown with newly harvested one under a full lightening condition at 25¡É to observe their photosensitivity. The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1. Stored seeds presented higher bolting rate than newly harvested ones when treated with low temperatures.
2. The seeds stored for 2 gears showed significantly higher bolting rate than 1-year stored ones when treated with temperature of 4 and 15¡É. Treatment with 10¡É resulted in high bolting rate of 72 to 99.3% in both I and 2 year stored seeds without significant difference between them. In checks free of low temperature treatment, bolting rate was low (2.2¡60.6%) with no difference between the storing periods.
3. Seeds stored for I year were faster in bolting than the newly harvested seeds when grown in a full day lightening room at 25¡É regardless the storing conditions.
4. Two-year stored seeds presented higher bolting rate in none shading plots than in the shading plots.
